Before and After

We are going out.  I delve into the back of my wardrobe for my Christmas party dress.  Slipping it on hurriedly – thinking about what shoes to wear and wondering if I have a pair of black tights – I stop a moment.  Had the outfit originally come with a belt?  Had I missed doing up a zip?  The boned dress that used to fit me like a corset is loose.  I pinch the excess swathes of material on either side of my waistline, unbelieving.  My weightloss has been so gradual and understated, it’s taken a change of season to astonish me.

Party Dress, before and after

Standing in front of the mirror, I hitch up the spaghetti straps of the dress, practically doubling them over.  With a few temporary tweaks, using safety pins and lingerie tape, I transform the dress from a fitted corset to a loose Empire-line.   The demure evening jacket that I’d planned to wear to cover myself up, lies abandoned on my bedroom floor, as I skip out of the house.
